Reports suggest that Nestle is incorporating sugar into its baby foods. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), children under the age of 2 should not consume sugar. In 2022, WHO issued a strict directive emphasizing that foods for children should not contain added sugars. The rationale behind this directive is that introducing sugar at a young age can cultivate a preference for sweet foods, potentially leading to obesity later in life. Excessive weight gain from early childhood is linked to diabetes, gastrointestinal issues, and cardiovascular problems.
Nestle primarily targets markets in Britain and Europe. While sugar is being added to baby foods sold in India, products sold in Britain and European markets do not contain added sugars. It’s worth noting that neighboring countries with lower incomes also have baby foods with added sugars.
Through collaborative research between Public Eye and the International Baby Food Action Network, the disparity in sugar content was revealed. Samples of Nestle’s baby food from Asia, Africa, and Latin America were collected and analyzed at a research center in Belgium. The findings indicated that while baby foods in Britain and Europe are sugar-free, those in Asia, Africa, and Latin America contain added sugars. Notably, Nestle India’s products were found to contain 2.2 grams of sugar per serving.
Nestle has stated that they are gradually reducing the sugar content in their baby foods. They claim to have reduced sugar content in baby foods by 30% and continue to work towards further reductions over the past 5 years.
The revelation that Nestle is adding sugar to baby foods, particularly in markets like India, raises serious concerns about child health. The WHO’s guidelines emphasize the importance of avoiding added sugars in early childhood to prevent future health complications. The differing standards between markets highlight the need for uniform regulations globally to ensure the safety and well-being of children worldwide.
